Available Soon: DIAMOND DUST BLOWBACK Single

Diamond Dust Blowback

Neon exhibit, walk through the light
Art as we live it, hanging on tight
To the forms and expressions
Act on loose impressions
Forms wrought of air
Our medium your unseeing stares

Diamond dust blowback

A masterpiece of prepared defacement
A dance, a flash tribe displacement
Poems writ in blood
Re-combined at random
The essence of our art
Lies in the tearing apart

Here's a little progress report on the Veil of Thorns tracks. Coming right up, we'll be releasing another single, the cover for which you can see above. The mix of the "A Side", as it were is complete and a couple remixes are in the works. We may throw in a remix of an existing Veil of Thorns track as well. These mixes are about 80% there. This should be coming in the next week or two.

Now, perhaps a few words on what we're up to are in order. To start with the usual vagueness, part of the larger project has to do some stuff with some graveyard footage, actors, poetry, fiction art and more...

The dreaded GOTHRONOMICON has been brought to us and is being translated by mute scribes and the content held therein tested by fearless and skilled mages, though a few have been lost between space... We have a tip on where to find the Gothrapocrypha and some info on what it will take to obtain it. We hope to get this process on film.

The plan with these singles is to release one or two songs at a time, with a lot of extras. This is part of the process of creating the next album. Those who collect the singles are helping fund operations. More than that, with the singles is a ton of exclusive material, including art, short stories, and videos, to mention a few. The more we can bring in, the more ambitious we can get with packaging, collaborative partners and more.  The more you buy, share, stream on Spotify or wherever you like to get your music, play on your radio shows, podcasts and spin in clubs, the better what we create will be. If you do play our music on your show, podcast etc. let us know so we can spread your links around.

Keep an eye on this space and on PANICMACHINE, for much is in store and updates should be coming early and often.

New Single: VEIL OF THORNS - The Girl Without A Face

The first of a number of specially priced EP's is here and available on PANICMACHINE!! We had some great contribution to the remixes and I'm extremely proud of this lineup with is me (P. Emerson Williams), Ferenc Teglas and Aidan McGoran. More details are in the pdf booklet that comes with the download. At a mere two dolluh 't'is a bahgain! Below are the words and images from the label and you can stream or buy this EP right here.

It's here, the first new music from Veil of Thorns in quite some time. The first of several planned "singles" from the band. (Six trax spanning 38 minutes can be considered a single by today's malleable standards. And at $2, you get a lot.) to the band's official pronouncement The Girl Without A Face is: A story ripped from thee pages ov thee dreaded GOTHRONOMICON!

And previews of material and contracts connected with this project is not on paper, but on something which seems to react to the touch, like it's alive and reading our souls as we handle it...

The Girl Without A Face Includes remixes by Veil of Thorns members P. Emerson Williams and Ferenc Teglas and other gems were wrought by a few elusive and mysterious artists. Like the Bath Salts Mix - from Grave Knave - soundz kinda like codeine, actually. Maybe this is the comedown... Veil of Thorns give Big Thanx to Grave Knave for the rough treatment. Hive Mind Drones bring the sound of at the minimum mass hysteria to their mix, of not something more harrowing and sinister. On the final Drone Mix, Solar Sound System got abrasively meditative on the track...

A whole lotta art is going to be created as part of the upcoming Veil of Thorns release(s). Dissemination shall happen through digital, print and sale of originals. Something very strange is developing in the form the lyrical/prose aspect and odd goings on have been spotted on Emerson's estate...

Forthcoming Single: Veil of Thorns - The Girl Without A Face

While things have been silent over in this corner, we've been hard at work. Members have been adding parts in studios from Florida to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Utrecht, Holland. Accompanying art is in process, and there is to be a lot of art. Scripts and lyrics are keeping me awake at night and actors are bringing many shades of genius to the project.

Above is the cover for the first single - A hint at one of the many things in the works. Once this single is let loose, more shall come early and often... Keep checking here, the Veil of Thorns Farcebook page and PANICMACHINE.

Veil of Thorns - Lust Beyond Flesh Video

The A side of the Lust Beyond Flesh 7" EP from 1994, which can also be heard on the Cafe Flesh CD. A bit of electronic dance-goth and a staple of the live show ever since we wrote it.

The way this track happened was when we were working on a cover of Iggy Pop's Lust For Life for a live gig at the Middle East downstairs in Cambridge MA. I came up with the beat and after jamming over it for a while, we went off the rails and something entirely new emerged. We did end up playing the cover, but with a beat that was more like the original.

-P. Emerson Williams

There are copies of the single left over and we have agreed to let them offer it over at PANICMACHINE:

Spontaneous Movie Night - Fritz Lang

Those of you who have been following Veil of Thorns for a while know of our love for the silent classics. We have wanted to do our own score for Metropolis for a long time, but the copyright cartel has pulled the film out of public domain for perpetuety, along with many cultural treasures of the 20th century.

I am impelled to post this after seeing this interview over at the Dangerous Minds blog:

In a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences.

Director: Fritz Lang

Writers: Thea von Harbou (screenplay), Thea von Harbou (novel)

Stars: Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel and Gustav Fröhlich

Woman in the Moon (German Frau im Mond) is a science fiction silent film that premiered October 15, 1929. It is often considered to be one of the first "serious" science fiction films. It was written and directed by Fritz Lang, based on the novel Die Frau im Mond (1928, translated as The Woman to the Moon in 1930) by his then-wife and collaborator Thea von Harbou. It was released in the USA as By Rocket to the Moon and in the UK as Woman in the Moon.

Hie thee hence to the Kicks Playlist post and you can stream the episode from the sidebar. In every episode, you get two hours of great variation brought to you your charming and knowledgeable hosts.
The idea of the radio show Kicks was born early 1989 when Radio Centraal expanded their broadcast schedule from 3 days each week to a whole week. Of course this expansion meant that they were looking for new shows to fill this on air time. Peggy and Bruno moved to Antwerp in 1988 and were already fans of this radio station and had been involved in other musical activities before, mostly as dj’s. So it was an obvious choice for them to express their love for all underground music by creating a weekly radio show. Since Peggy and Bruno get most of their kicks by searching for and listening to the diversity of underground music they decided this would be an excellent name for their quest. On a late Friday afternoon in May 1989 Kicks made it’s appearance on the airwaves in Antwerp. After a short while their time slot changed from 1 to 2 hours weekly. After a year it was impossible for Peggy and Bruno to combine this time slot on Friday with their daily activities so Kicks moved to Wednesday from 20:30h to 22:30h CET.

NOSFERATU And TXTBK’s CH▼ЯCH X▼ BЯXK3N 7▲NG▼▲G3

Well, here's one for an evening filled with dark sounds, the like of which have never vibrated in this universe before...

First up, our original score for NOSFERATU (1922)!! We created the score for the silent classic NOSFERATU back in 2005. Over the years, a number of people have asked if we could release the music on its own. The original session files were thought lost forever, but a valued supporter had stored the files in WAV format on a now shut down cyber locker and managed to keep a local copy. Now remastered, we're finally bringing this forth.

Because P. Emerson Williams can leave no idle idea alone, he created a soundtrack to "Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror", the silent masterpiece by F.W. Murnau. Dozens of folks have done the same, but we're proud to present this version.

The approach was inspired by the Dogme 95 manifesto. Now, using so much technology probably makes it anathema to its adherents, but Emerson's mode of working is never pure, but, Harmony Korinne fanatic that he be, he felt an affinity to the movement. Several obstructions were placed on the process. The first rule was only to use sounds he already had on his hard drive. This was easy, as what he had taking up space were the audio tracks from the Veil Of Thorns album he had just completed (Manifestation Objective). What you'll hear is 90% vocals with much less processing than it sounds like. Secondly, he gave himself a time limit of eight hours to create and sync the audio to the video file. "It actually took longer to render the movie than it took to write the music(k)", saith P. Emerson "which was fine, as I had lots of drawing I wanted to get done."

For those few of you who haven't seen countless versions of this film, here is part of the wikipedia entry:

This was the first film of the production company Prana-Film GmbH; it was also the last as they declared bankruptcy after Bram Stoker's estate—acting for his widow, Florence Stoker sued for copyright infringement (plagiarism) and won. The court ordered all existing prints of Nosferatu destroyed, but a number of copies of the film had already been distributed around the world. These prints were then copied over the years, resulting in Nosferatu gaining a reputation as one of the greatest movie adaptations of the vampire legend.

With the influence of producer and production designer, Albin Grau, the film established one of two main lines of vampire depiction in movies. The "Nosferatu-type" is a living corpse with rodent features (especially elongated fingernails and incisors), associated with rats and plague, and neither charming nor erotic but totally repugnant. The victims usually die and are not turned into vampires themselves. The more common other line is the "Dracula-type" (established by Bela Lugosi's version of Dracula and perpetuated by Christopher Lee), a charming aristocrat adept at seduction and turning his victims into new vampires.

And you will not want to miss this bit of loveliness, which includes some Veil of Thorns mangling of selected trax:

Tonight April 15 2012

Veil of Thorns History: BIRTHED (2002)

Throughout the -90's we were gigging a lot with a few revolving s-pots in the lineup, Veil of Thorns remained a band focused on playing live. In the period between -94 and -98 we wrwe gigging and rehearsing so much, it ended up cutting into the writing and recording. Contrast that with the output in the last decade - six full albums, a string of silent film scores and about a dozen compilatioin tracks vs. four cassette demos, three of which were widely released, five compilation tracks and one 7" in the 1990's with some overlap of cuts from recording to recording. If I had been more forward thinking, I would have had these shows recorded in audio and video. Many of the gigs included guest players and extensive improvisation. We have put out the call several times for footage around Boston, New York or New Orleans from that time. There were dozens of gigs caught on video, but none of this footage has as yet surfaced...

We were slated to release our debut CD through Misanthropy Records by the end of this period, but was not to happen as Tiziana, head of Misanthropy decided to close the label. What ended up as Cafe Flesh and The Dead God Sessions (tracks not on Cafe Flesh were later released as part of Dead God) demos done for the label for this album. There are more than a hundred hours of material not included in those releases I have on DAT tape, some of which that may see the light of day at some point.

In 1997 I signed with Nocturnal Art Productions and released the first Choronzon album in 1998. This brought much more attention than Veil of Thorns ever got, and I focused on that for a bit. I recorded the Choronzon albums Lilith, Era Vulgaris and Larvae in 1989/1999, after which I dropped out of all normal society for a few years following.

Basically I went into the woods and was deep in the grip of the Gwyllt. By the time I re-emerged, I was psychically stripped down to nearly nothing. There's a world of difference between the work prior to and following this time. Musical habits and even my usual instruments were largely abandoned for the Birthed recording sessions. My methods continue to evolve from what I established with Birthed to this day.

For the first time, new technology meant I could use the cutup method simply with sound, and spot new patterns and create arrangements from them. More subconscious currents bubble forth on Salon Apocalypse and Necrofuturist, perhaps, but the danciness of the tracks on Birthed was a celebration of rebirth.
Within the tracks on "Birthed", a CD by Veil Of Thorns, you can hear parallels to industrial bands such as Pig, Razed in Black and Nine Inch Nails and, more often than not, you can hear the pure creativity of P. Emerson Williams. Anything created by this man, the brain behind Choronzon (black metal tinged with experimental, ambient and industrial edges) , you would expect to be eclectic and creative. It's his trademark. Herein you'll encounter thick, pummeling, distorted spears of electro/guitar industrial, D&B, goth, dirgey slow industrial moodiness, etc., etc., etc., etc., in fact, etcetera ad infinitum. What's persistent in Williams' smooth, creative and original fusion of various elements is the sustained tone and mood, like that of a soul resigned to nihilistic fate. None of Emerson's creations are quite like anything else, even when you're hearing touches of something else in there. His fierce originality score another point for the underground.

Follow Strange Factories on Facebook!

There are creative endeavours, film projects, theatre productions, mythological examinations, transmedia experiences, works that offer psychological insights, part of or particles of sand in the shell of the zeitgeist that grow into pearls. FoolishPeople are on a path with Strange Factories that encompasses all of the above, but is also so much more. Strange Factories is something to which anyone who appreciates the pushing of artistic boundaries in film and art has to pay attention.

Strange Factories - HD Trailer from FoolishPeople on Vimeo.

We are not in the most critical need of another entertainment product in our mediated age, and life-changing and challenging encounters with art has to bring us beyond the marketer-colonized world of transmedia. You are invited into the world of Strange Factories, a place in which you will confront your own self in the most real terms.

A writer, haunted by an idea for a new story hunts for four refugee performers of a theatre destroyed in a mysterious fire.
He locates his friends in a remote, pagan settlement founded by Stronheim; owner of a Strange Factory hidden deep in the local countryside that emits an infamous Hum.
Victor enters into a dangerous pact when a vow is made to re-build their theatre if the story is completed in time for it to be performed at the village festival, where bizarre rituals are enacted by the Villagers under the influence of a hallucinogenic effluence siphoned out of the Strange Factory.
Victor’s imagination and the fragmented memories of his friends collide in a violent fiction that not everyone can survive.
Strange Factories’ is an immersive feature film; a uniquely powerful and original project that fuses cinema with a dreamlike environment to create an experience like no other.
Principal photography on Strange Factories was completed in Prague and the UK in October 2011 and is currently in post-production with release scheduled for 2012.

It is my great privilege to be part of the FoolishPeople family. Many of you have come to me to tell me how deeply you have been touched by the releases Salon Apocalypse and Necrofuturist. Neither of these albums would have been possible if not for my having been allowed to work on Cirxus, Abattoir Pages, A Red Threatening Sky, The Basement and having been a part of the magickal world of FoolishPeople for the last few years.

[LISTEN: direct link]

In this special Pilot episode of the new Modern Mythology podcasting series, Rusty Shackleford takes time to have a sit down chat with Howard Bloom. Many of you know Bloom from his books The Lucifer Principle, The Genius of the Beast and The Global Brain, in addition to his interviews and appearances on the Disinformation television series originally produced for the BBC.

In this interview, Rusty discusses Howard's role in helping to build relationships between artists such as Prince and Joan Jett and their public, touching upon the role of the artist as a modern day myth maker and the heir apparent of the shaman. Bloom's scientific and biological perspectives are also examined in conversation, particularly in reference towards the cultural myths explored and exposed in his newest book The God Problem.

Background music for this episode provided by members of Bradley The Buyer, HoodooEngine, Mankind is Obsolete, and Veil of Thorns. The featured tracks are In The Flesh from HoodooEngine’s album “Murder The World” and Bradley The Buyer’s cover of Prince’s “When Dove’s Cry”

Veil of Thorns History - Manifestation Objective

For this one, I'm letting the music and words speak for the release. This one got some very enthusiastic reactions, but I didn't devote the two years following it to pimping it out. Manifestation Objective got a hundred thousand + free downloads between 2005 and up until I moved the Veil of Thorns site here. You can still stream it for nowt or next to nowt on Mog, Rdio, Spotify etc. but you do help us bring on the next stage of Veil of Thorns, which I can promise you, is leagues beyond anything we've done thus far.

-P. Emerson Williams

Reproach (Full of Hope)

As all came
Crashing down,
We could not help but laugh
Draining blood to function on belief
Factious stream counter to all pleas
Reclaim vision,
Howl like wolves
Learn to love the crack of the lash
Chambers full, envy and returns distorted
On the sharp edge advance changes design

Formless,
Unsullied,
Holy, with indigent longing
Hollow ravenous greed and profits twisted
Resting on the firmament adapts intention
The innocent
Break off,
Contemplating dispersions quelling
Deplete to pour out acts in certainty
Factious blood counters all entreaties

My Inner Sanctum

In a shaded doorway
Watching the spirits at play,
Through a cracked and shimmering window to the world;
Through my surprise, welling up in my eyes:
Your soul;
Bleeding, old; a deep well of love:
Sepulchral, cold.

The crowning glory swathed in fear,
The brave action recoiling into futility.
To my knees glancing upward,
There flies pain: mine.

Deep ecstasy traces desire.
Hidden places, lost hold;
No one to sustain reality,
My love erases me.
I turn around to go,
The world around me flows through my body.
The bitter realization contains the happy seed: yes, me.

Weak and stumbling,
Gloriously breathing still dawn’s air,
That part of me now lost forever,
It wanders lonely in the dark.
Battle-weary I remain
Inconsistency remarked,
Though seemingly complete.
The soul bears not
Such vacuous conceit.
God damn you!
How can I bear to see your face?
Your every tear reveals my cowering disgrace.
To my knees, glancing inward:
Imprisoned:
My inner sanctum.

Exaltation in Ascendancy

Weeping alight, Drawn in too tight
Warnings too late are told in our plight
The haints come with parched, red grins
Celebrate this day our irredeemable sins

Nocturnal professions come into nothingness
Lifts our burdens, becomes our hidden weapons
Wailing by the window in the grief of the proud
Dread failings wrapped around us like shrouds

A soothing breeze, a haunting phrase
Leaks out from behind the gate
Secret passions worn like a medal
Truth be told, trust is never to be shown

Worship of Disclosure

Thought shall inaugurate the fall of fear
The fall eliminate the life that was
The life that was can never have been
Lie turns back on lie; behold
Fear shall die with its slaves
Visions shall lie, telling of the fear of death
Laughter shall erase this carnage of thought

Fear ridden spectres flitting by
Still their fetters bind your soul
Stronghold of corrosion let burst
The floodgates of dead gods desires
Move on by in disgust
Slink through the shadows of infinitude
Killing the will, slipping back
Back to that which never was

In distrust lie the possibilities
That were stillborn in haloed fields
We’ll tear the cities down falsehood by falsehood

Manifestation Objective

Soul fire kisses, a hapless passion
Upon the pulse of the altars of madness
Radiant visage glowing words on flesh
Remembrance of my deaths shadow
Take my hand personified
Leads you down

Bound to the end of time
Strewn about like gravel
Blown like glass
Where lunacy comforts

Draw In, Wind Down

Wheels on wet road greet my waking eyes
Halted by the touch of memory
I smell the rain and hear its song
This bed will not let go of me
Nor the thirsty, feverish day get off me

Draw in, wind down

I still feel the touch of the nocturnal breeze
The seeds are flung at the remains; reasons found

Dream Shadow

Solemn grey – the sky evokes my Angel
Walking in the rain, I’m not alone
White lace, wet lace light and clinging
Clinging to the face of the forest
I want to sleep in the rain, in the snow
Warm and safe under the snows ice hands

I fall and am safe
I sleep and fear the face
I fly and am no more
And am no more

Sleep pulls me down into silken sepulchers
Born away on seas of sound I cry out
A breeze soothes my bitter mind on the crimson plane

Wrapped in those I love
I awaken to dawn caresses
And they are no more

Can’t stop Laughing (The Beauty of Drowning)

Souls defied, deep penetration
tearing asunder liquid desire.
Inner strength, all-consuming turmoil
pulls me down, pulls me under the black surface.

For all I love I give you this;
(Christians to the lions).
As we gaze upon the black water;
(you pull me under).
Speak to me of how I love the pain.
I can't stop laughing,
I can't stop laughing!
(The beauty of drowning).

We lie side by side, blowing sparks
gazing into the screaming silence.
Under the birthing moo we pray,
pray to be together for all time.

Undergrowth Silent with Want

Ice like claws languid in the damp
Memory fades, life drifts, blood dries
Spreading out among the leaves
The end begins, birth is everywhere

Embrace of roots; here is everywhere
All life is one – we are here
Lost in forever, hearing, feeling
Seeing all

Fated, Cascading; Submerged

No-one ever thinks about how it’ll end
Line after line gone up in smoke with fire as your only friend
All the thought of a lifetime with no conscious evolution
One cannot recall where it began to slide

Lost beneath the debris
You can no longer tell which way is up
We seem to count on forever
One automatic pull on the lever

The vital engine roars not trusted to deliver
The pain it will subside and make the muscle bigger
Dance victorious on our aching bloody feet
One more time, let’s hear the beat and spread our joy like opened veins

Come, let us wait here hiding beneath the snow
Centuries shall pass maddeningly as we watch them grow
Angels watching over us, attainment purified
Death, rebirth, life death, in snowy spirals fly

Force release virtual discordant hold of defense substitute pale vicinity gliding pseudonyms gravestone figures vitriol leitrim

Extend Inward, Breathe Out
(instrumental)

The Gathering World Withdrew Its Fury

Lay me down – I fear no more
The longing is subsiding
I’ve locked the door – I’ve freed my mind
It’s only you and me
It’s time, let’s go

And as the sands of time conspire to erase us
It will be done

Dispersed in flight – we are alone
The vision slowly fades
Close my eyes – choke my cries
Now we’re going home

Necrofuturist Episode 32 - Beastern Crabalistic Sources

The Necrofuturist Illuminati were set up for "gothronomic intriguing rather than in speculation", the Necrofuturist Illuminati became "much more characteristic of a cross-dimensional militia in action than a disorder with initiations." P. Emerson Williams' contempt for certain exoteric pursuits - as a "thing-in-itself" - was widely known: "... in Williams' system the phraseology of Gothraism, the Necrolistic legends of Freemasonry, the mystical imaginings of the Fartinistes, play at first no part at all. For all forms of 'gothosophy,' gnoccicism, refined spiritsism, and musick-magick Williams expresses nothing but contemporaneousness, and the Doze-Croix Necromasons are bracketed with the Necruits by the Necrofuturist Illuminati as enemas it is necessary to out-twit at every turn. Consequently no degree of Doze-Croix finds a place in Williams' system, as in all the other Gothtronic orders of the day which drew their influence from Beastern or Crabalistic sources."

Movie Sunday Holiday Edition

Penniless and withdrawing from opiates, Danny emerges from a 72-hour stay in a police holding cell. Hoping to make enough money to buy his next hit of heroin, he scours the streets looking for something to steal. After an unsuccessful attempt to break into a parked car, he discovers an unattended suitcase sitting in a doorway. He makes off with the case and takes it to an abandoned park to examine its contents. There he finds that the case contains two severed human legs. Disgusted, he discards the legs and tries to find a buyer for the suitcase. He finds a buyer who gives him three dollars but also informs him that the local heroin dealer has been arrested.

The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb was made using a combination of stop-motion animation and pixilation (live actors posed and shot frame-by-frame), often with live actors and puppets sharing the frame.
A boy born the size of a small doll is kidnapped by a genetic lab and must find a way back to his father in this inventive adventure filmed using stop motion animation techniques. Tom meets a variety of strange creatures and eventually discovers a race of miniature humans like himself.

Movie Sunday - Writers Shaping Their Own Worlds

Well, Movie Saturday has become Movie Sunday this week because of a terribly unreliable ISP. Anyway, here's what inspires us this week.

A meditation on future event potentiality can be seen as a quantum state in which all possible actions, outcomes and phenomena existing until attention from the observer solidifies it into a single state. Here are three very different examples of artists who saw things not as others saw them, but the worlds they conceived shape the one we're in in strange ways.

PKD was paranoid and thought he was under surveillance. So did Hemingway, and it was thought until recently that Hemingway's paranoia had no basis in reality, but he had indeed been watched by government agencies. PHilip K Dick raised many questions in his work that we had better find answers to. As irksome as recent years have been, without reflecting on the issues of consciousness, the very real threat of being subject to pre-crime punishment and many other topics he originated that seemed so fantastic at the time.

Consider this - a recluse from Providence writes tales for a tiny fringe publication and ends up influencing writers generations later. Through the continued popularity of his work and spreading influence of those he influenced weave their way throughout culture. Culture shapes thoughts, and thoughts determine actions. I have put forth the idea that all narrative is myth, and that political, commercial, cultural and religious myth is largely what determines what manifests as the world in which we live. The Chthulu mythos is like the mythological equivalent of "art for art's sake". Freeing the imagination from mundane perception is as valuable as conscious memetic engineering. There is real value in not having to justify everything in practical, pragmatic and material terms. Our current political/corporate power structure is Terry Pratchett's Auditors possessing human institutions. we can take comfort in the cold, indifferent universe and rest assured that the Old Ones will awaken and chaos never died...

H.P. Lovecraft was the forefather of modern horror fiction having inspired such writers as Stephen King, Robert Bloch and Neil Gaiman. The influence of his Cthulhu mythos can be seen in film (Re-Animator, Hellboy, and Alien), games (The Call of Cthulhu role playing enterprise), music (Metallica, Iron Maiden) and pop culture in general.
But what led an Old World, xenophobic gentleman to create one of literature's most far-reaching mythologies? What attracts even the minds of the 21st century to these stories of unspeakable abominations and cosmic gods?
LOVECRAFT: FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN is a chronicle of the life, work and mind that created these weird tales as told by many of today's luminaries of dark fantasy including John Carpenter, Guillermo Del Toro, Neil Gaiman, Stuart Gordon , Caitlin Kiernan, and Peter Straub.

It's fashionable to hate on Crowley in certain circles these days, but I'm not inclined to take part in that. What are the current tendencies towards social control but an old Aeon struggling to live on while in its death throws?

Menagerie of Suffering - Bright Colours of Horror For The Dark Season

To assuage thee horrorz ov thee season, the fine folks at Grimtown Records have put together a most atmospheric compilation and bring it to you for free. We contributed a track which, inspired by the theme, we recorded in an abandoned theatre (of terror) deep down in a rusting valley. We made sure to capture the reverberations and eldritch voices hid therein...

Grimtown Records is proud to give you our first free compilation:

Menagerie of Suffering

a tribute to Italian horror and exploitation

We’ve put together a brilliant playlist for you, with a variety of artists who share their unique experience and visions. From pataphysics, ambient and noise, and further on to pure seventies retro. Download and distribute far and wide, and keep the spirit of exploitation alive and screaming.
If you like this music (and art), don’t be afraid to let us know, and don’t be afraid to tell the artists involved. Musicians are all psychick vampires, and want your emotional feedback. If there’s enough of it, there might be more releases in the future.

Veil of Thorns History - Dead God

Opening proceedings on this one is a perky pop confection that will probably catch those who have been with us for a while off guard. Dead God consists mainly of a cassette rip of the third Veil of Thorns demo from 1992 that was never released. This opening track shows one immediately what a rock solid bass Cathy Chenoweth delivered in recordings and live. Here appears the many splendored pounding from Ruddy Bitch the Younger for the first time. That Emerson guy, well he moans and wails, on guitar he flails over hill and dale... Final track features a thunderous low-end bass apocalypsis brought by Christopher McClain.

Torrenters, and there have been many of you for these tracks, will notice there's a close match between Dead God and a release called The End of the Beginning. I figured I'd give this one one last go at cleanup on the sound and add in a couple tracks from The Dead God Sessions from the second lineup that aren't alternate versions of tracks from Cafe Flesh. I the result is a more solid experience, though still undeniably lo-fi and different from all other Veil of Thorns offerings.

Few people heard The End of the Beginning this at the time and none heard The Dead God Sessions outside the inner circle and Tiziana from Misanthropy Records. Raw recordings from rehearsal and pre production demos for the debut Veil of Thorns album in 1995. The Dead God Sessions tracks were recorded live in a single take in most cases, using two mikes, placed at either end of a 30’x30’ rehearsal room in Boston. The analog recording was extremely hot, so little compression or noise reduction was done.

Within days of the conclusion of the End of the Beginning recording sessions, Jarrett was gone and Cathy was on her way to New York. Christopher (Dogface) McClain was to step in and Veil of Thorns would start showing a new focus. McClain brought with him a massive bass rig that could raze small towns. In performing the title track live I would stick my head and microphone right in the speaker of the bass cabinet to add that overload of volume to the screaming at the end. Good times.

Already the vocals were less operatic, and there is even a hint of pop songwriting, something that was not to be revisited until much later on Birthed.
